scuba dive the Poor Knights Islands New Zealand with

POOR KNIGHTS ISLANDS , TUTUKAKA , NORTHLAND , NEW ZEALAND

Hope point is the location of one of the many airbubble caves at the Poor Knights, these being by far the largest. Of the four airpockets here, the largest can easily accommodate 6 divers and the smallest only 1.

During easterly and northeasterly storms, the water is pounded against the cliff and the air is forced underwater and up into these pockets where it cannot escape. They are only 5-7 metres deep.

When conditions allow us to dive this site, the visibility is always fantastic, often exceeding 40 metres. The bubble caves and the surrounding area is home to hundreds of blue mao mao, sandagers wrasse, scarlet wrasse and black angel fish.

The wall before you come to the bubbles is a steeply shelving face, with sparse eklonia kelp coverage, with many cracks holding moray eels and scorpianfish, and grazing nudibranchs. Further out towards the point, you can see splendid perch, pink mao mao and demoiselles schooling by their thousands.
