We
swim from 'Hideaway' over to the wall and descend through a cloud of demoiselles
until reaching a depth of 19 metres. Swimming north we soon reach the entrance
to the first chimney. The opening is large, allowing us to easily pass through
into the crystal clear water, with amazing shafts of light penetrating down from
the surface. Looking in the cracks and crevices we see shy rock cod hiding from
the light, bigeyes and a pair of banded coral shrimp.
Hovering in the middle of the chimney is a
good size school of pink mao mao, and we slowly ascend to their level. There are
about 100 and some allow us a very close approach. Totally enchanting
We
continue our ascent and pause at 10 metres, where we see a pair of Lord Howe
Island coralfish which is quite unusual at this shallow depth. Unlike a lot of
fish, these mate and bond with the same partner for life.
At 5 metres now, we swim out the top entrance
of the chimney and work our way south, back along the cliff face. We hunt for
nudibranchs, quite successfully, until we see the 'Hideaways'shadow that signals
our return. Excellent.
