looking out from the cave to serpent rockRiko Riko cave must be one of the unknown wonders of the world. A huge chamber set inside the island ofAorangi, it has been described as the biggest sub woofer in the world. The word Riko Riko in Maori means fading light or waning moon.

Diving here is an experience not to be missed. Starting on the northern corner, you descend and swim past hundreds of stunted gorgonian fans, watching your bubbles flow upwards, like a waterfall in reverse.

The pink mao mao of this cave rest in cracks and crevices, their normal bright pink colour replaced with hues of strawberry and cream. Conger eels, hidden during the day at the other dive sites, are out on patrol.

goatfish a.k.a. red mulletAt the back of the cave, tucked in corner only 7 metres deep, lives a species of true coral, which was only previously known from a depth of 2000 metres. Amazing.

Turning for the southern point, you swim once again through the electric blue twilight and emerge into the daylight.
