Taravana
Cave
Taravana Cave is actually an huge underwater
cavern system that penetrates into the very heart of Tawhiti Rahi. At its most
extreme it leads you 250 metres into the island.
At
the larger of the two entrances the bottom is at a depth of 35 metres. The roof
of the cavern is surrounded by a stunning array of gorgonian fans. Large schools
of pink mao mao often congregate in this area, possibly using the cave for
shelter. It is also a good place to look for splendid perch and longfin
boarfish.
Only
40 metres or so from the cliff face, landing bay pinnacle rises from 50 metres,
to just 6 metres from the surface. This is the perfect place for those not
comfortable with cave diving and is itself a well known feature of the 'knights'
.
A
typical dive here is to sink to your planned maximum depth, and slowly spiral
your way back up to the top. Several mosaic moray eels make this their home, and
along with the huge schools of demoiselles, results in this being an awesome
dive.
